May 20th, 2009UncategorizedThe internet is currently awash with people debating whether or not ikea is to launch
a new eco-friendly car called the 'leko'. the hype stems from a french website where designer,
christophe grozs explains the virtues of this new environmentally sound car.
the 'leko' is covered in a white sheet adorned with the ikea logo and URL above it is a live
countdown to the supposed launch date: april the first. obviously this has lead many to
believe that the whole thing is simply an elaborate april fools day joke.
yet, those showing more faith in potential release of an ikea car - note that the website bears
the WWF logo and that france's 'sustainable development week' also kicks off on april first.
the only 'official' word we can find comes from the guardian's coverage of the 'leko',
in a statement apparently from ikea france's PR manager:
'I can confirm is that ikea france has decided to support a new car system in line with its
positioning: cheaper and more responsible than any other; allowing a dramatic reduction in
your gas spending; built so it can adapt to the products you want to carry.
but, no complementary information is supposed to be released before the launch...'

Czech Republic prime minister Mirek Topolánek has apologized for calling President Obama's stimulus plan "a road to hell" on Wednesday, but says it's not his fault: "AC/DC played here last week and their cult song ‘Highway to Hell’ might have led me in that very improvised speech to use the phrase ‘road to hell,'" he told a Czech newspaper, adding that Obama's economic policy is more like a fast machine that keeps its motor clean.

6 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced (¼-inch)
½ T ground cinnamon
¾ T granulated sugar
2¼ C all-purpose flour
2¼ C dark brown sugar
4/5 of a stick unsalted butter, melted
Toss apple slices in sugar and cinnamon. Mix flour and brown sugar on low speed with a mixer. Slowly add butter to flour and brown sugar and mix until you get a sand-like consistency. Butter and flour bottom and sides of 9-by-9 baking dish. Pour ¼-inch layer of flour/sugar/butter crumble into dish. Add a single layer of apples. Gently: Don’t press down. Continue layering: ¼-inch of crumble, then apples. Finish with a layer of crumble. Cover with foil. Bake at 350° for 90 minutes. Serve hot with vanilla ice cream. -

One of my points of interest recently has been the social identity and its various levels (going from such a broad thing as being a citizen to being a "part of a relation").
This is what the author, cirka, says about the work, on the Wooster Collective site where I discovered the work:"I've been thinking a lot about public information vs. private information and why it's so fascinating to read about the mundane details of someone else's private life (like finding their grocery list that they dropped in the parking lot, for example). So, I decided to reverse this by choosing "declassify" some of my own personal documents: letters that, at a different time in my life, I would have been mortified for anyone else to see. All are letters that were written to me (except for one, which shows a short email correspondence). They span from a letter written by my pen pal when I was about 10 to a letter that I received last summer. I silk-screened all the letters in the original color that they were written in. The only things that I altered were the names of people mentioned in the letters, which I censored in black ink."
I love when an artist plays with the idea of a genuine self, flirts with exhibitionism, and yet the work remains a presentation, a mise-en-scene.

Halima Bashir meeting with George Bush.
In some cases, getting to a more aesthetic experience means moving away from the knowledge, choosing to forget the information we might have. Here we have a picture that has a very good, rational explanation: an African political activist fears for her life, so in order to remain entirely anonymous, she drapes herself entirely. The cause, peace in Darfur, is very noble, Halima Bashir's story (you have the link above) is shocking.
But this same picture can be seen differently. Here we have the president of the USA in conversation with the Unknown, the absolute Stranger. Here is a confrontation of the American/Western values, aesthetics, mode of functioning (notice the microphones!), attitude (the gesture! the gesture!) with the ghost of another world. It is a beautiful picture, and the most outstanding thing about it is - it's a readymade. -
